Long ago, when the internet service provider Prodigy was just beginning and internet speeds were painfully slow, there was a message board on Prodigy that I used to visit regularly. Long before I became a psychiatrist or psychoanalyst, I found myself posting questions there such as, “What motivates people to do anything?” or “What is the meaning of life?”
I have always been fascinated by questions of meaning, purpose, and what makes for a good life. I continue to live with and think about these questions every day through my own inner work, my clinical practice of psychoanalysis, therapy, teaching, supervision and consultation of trainees, and my reading of the psychoanalytic canon.
In an après-coup sort of way, I now find myself returning to those early message-board conversations, but with a much broader life experience behind me. I wanted to create a space where I could once again think aloud about these questions — a place to write at times about psychoanalysis, therapy, and whatever else feels worth reflecting upon.
These posts are here both to be explored and to offer more of a window into me and my work. Please feel free to reach out if something here resonates with you, makes you think, or furthers your own questions and self-inquiry.
